Waking Hypnosis – Hypnosis Without Trance – Leo Gopal

Welcome to my first Lesson to you on IATH, let me re-introduce myself, I am Leo Gopal, Co-founder of IATH alongside Nathan Thomas. For my first lesson I would like to talk about waking hypnosis, hypnosis without trance.

Since this is one of my favourites and also one of the more interesting parts of my live courses I found this to be a pretty interesting subject to enlighten you on. Firstly, in my opinion, waking hypnosis has a lot to do with your definition of what hypnosis is, this just basically takes us into semantics but then again it is needed in this situation in order to understand and be a successful waking hypnotist.

Hypnosis is the bypass of the critical factor, and where the suggestions of the hypnotist become the reality of the subject. That is a very simply yet debatable description, but that is my personal description that works for me and all my students.

The reason I define this as such is that most people use trance and hypnosis interchangeably and in my understanding this just causes limitations and confusion. Waking hypnosis is basically hypnosis without the presence of an active “sleep” or trance state.

Now since we got the rambling out of the way, it’s time for more rambling. I will help you understand this by trying to simplify this as follows:

Hypnosis, no matter how you see it, is entirely about communication, the better a communicator you are the better you are at hypnosis. So hypnosis is, in one sense, persuasion at the deepest level. Now the mind works simply in the fashion of the thinker and the prover, and the simple law here is: what the thinker thinks the prover proves. Sounds simple? Good, because it is.

Now the Basic principle of waking hypnosis then is even simpler, create a question for the thinker, the thinker then looks within to “prove” or disprove the idea, while this process is happening contribute to aid the prover.

Get it?

Ok, let’s try a metaphor, You are playing a game on your playstation but your opponent can only be defeated in one way, you attack your opponent, but you can only damage him by breaking his armour, but the moment you stop or wait, his armour repairs itself, so the moment you hit it, you then have an instant opportunity to penetrate and give the final attack that allows you to win. Thats waking hypnosis, you find and create an opening, your enter, make a change, watch the effect.

Now how do we do this?

There are as many ways to do this as there are inductions, but since this is inductionless, I would try one of my most simple methods, note it is advised you study the previous lessons on hypnotic language and suggestions to understand this lesson.

The quickest and easiest way is to create a doubt in the subject, attacking and compounding on the doubt until it is proved to be true.

The best way is to do a quick recital of what I would say, everything said below has to be said with animation and confidence:

“Put your hand onto the desk for me, great, (putting your hand upon his, to use association), now in a moment I am going to lift my hand away from yours, but when I do your hand will be completely stuck to the desk, as if it were glued and moulded into the wood (pushing slightly down, the prove is searching for proof), and even more interesting to is you find that the harder you try in vain to unstuck your hand, the more it sticks and moulds with the desk… great, now try (lifting your hand) try and unstuck your hand and find how much tighter it sticks, go on…”

Now that is just a simple use of association and the compounding effect, this is in no way a script to be followed but must be spoken confidently and comfortable, there is no limit to what can be accomplished with waking hypnosis than there is with hypnosis with trance.

For example, the above hand stick can easily be led to complete anaesthesia in the subject’s hand, as follows:

“Now I in a moment I am going to tap your hand, when I do your hand will be able to unstuck itself and lift of the desk, and the moment that happens your hand will be completely anaesthetic as if all sense of feeling was left behind on the desk, absorbed into the desk when you released your hand, your hand will be completely comfortable, completely numb, completely anaesthetic (tap the hand), now lift your hand and find it completely numb now”

That is another simple phenomenon you can lead to. The basic principle to remember for this technique is:

Be confident to create doubt, then feed the doubt. Make the thinker think, and stimulate till the prover proves it. Simple? Now Go out there and do it, don’t forget to tell me how great you did now, ok?

Great… oh just by the way, noticed how your blinking began to slow down the lower you go through this lesson? And how your breathing also began to relax and slow down too? And how your hand on the mouse seems to… Just kidding, :P now go out there and practice practice practice, meet you in the forums.
